Picnic Adventure

Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that give us the biggest thrills. Think friendly Main Street sidewalks, a day in the park, a walk in nature. This adventure is a return to the days of skipping stones and chasing butterflies – all with the relaxation that only a small town can deliver.

Ease into a friendlier pace.

On your first day, arrive in Appomattox and check into one of our beautiful bed and breakfast inns.  Start your adventure in downtown historic Appomattox where you can stroll Main Street and visit all of our quaint shops and antique mall. Next have dinner in one of our downtown diners or other restaurants in town.

Take me to the river.

Day two starts with a wonderful breakfast and then traveling a short distance to the James River State Park. Three miles of riverfront await at one of Virginia’s newest parks, along with recreation galore. Pack a picnic lunch or pick up some snacks at the livery store in the park.

Rent a canoe, kayak, or tube and enjoy a wonderful day on the scenic James River.  Enjoy a day of peaceful surroundings as you float the river or bring along your fishing pole and catch some small mouth bass along the way. Enjoy cooking out at one of the campsites along the river or travel back into town for a nice dinner at one of our local restaurants.

Let wildlife see you home.

On the last day of your visit, and a filling breakfast, spend your morning following the Appomattox Court House Birding and Wildlife Loop. This driving tour winds its way through habitats that may reveal wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, a Blackburnian warbler, blue-headed vireo or even a twelve-spotted skimmer. No matter what you encounter, being in nature here is a thrill.
