State Campgrounds

Bear Creek Lake State Park: A 326-acre park with 55 drive-in campsites, two centrally located bath houses and utility hookups on 29 sites. Ask the rangers about campfire talks and children's programs. Grills at campsites. Located 4.5 miles from Cumberland Courthouse. From Route 60, go north on Route 622 and south on Route 629. 804-492-4410

Holliday Lake State Park: A 250-acre park with a 150-acre lake set within the Piedmont's rolling hills. There are 30 campsites, all with electricity, water and grill. There is a bathhouse and hot water within the campground. Boat launching and swimming are free to overnight campers. Access from Route 24 between Appomatttox and Route 60, as well as Routes 626, 640 and 692. Call 434-248-6308

Twin Lakes Sate Park: Located in the heart of Virginia, this 349-acre park offers 30 campsites, all with electricity, water and a grill. A bathhouse is available. Take Route 360 west of Burkeville to Route 613 north. Go east on Route 629. Call 434-392-3435

The Cedar Crest Facility: Located within Twin Lakes State Park, Cedar Crest offers group cabins, lodge rooms and campsites. Call 800-933-7275
Cabins Six housekeeping cabins (two-bedroom, six-person) and one smaller cabin (two-bedroom, four person). Book space one month in advance. Cabins are rented for group use first, with two-cabin, two-night minimum.

Camping There are 20 group camping sites with no electric or water hookups.
Lodge Mistletoe Lodge has four bedrooms with two single beds each, a meeting space, common bath, kitchen area and patio.

Occoneechee State Park: This 2,100-acre state park is on Buggs Island Lake, which just happens to be Virginia's largest lake (also known as John H. Kerr Reservoir). There are 88 campsites, 51 with no hookups, and 37 with electricity and water. Lakeside camping is available. Boat launch free for campers. Directions: Near Clarksville, 1.5 miles east on Route 58 east near the Route 15 intersection.

Buggs Island: The Army Corps of Engineers operates numerous recreation areas around Buggs Island Lake with year round camping. Admission charges are waived from October to April. North Bend Park and Marina on Route 4 has 246 campsites (89 with water and electricity) with hot showers. 434 738-6143

Rudds Creek Recreation Area: Near Boydton with 100 sites, most with water and electricity. There are hot showers. 434)-738-6827

Longwood Park: Just south of Clarksville, Longwood Park has 55 tent or trailer campsites (11 with water and electricity) and hot showers. 434-374-2711

James River State Park: One of the state's newest parks, located in Buckingham County at the junction of the Tye and James rivers. All sites are primitive (no utilities). There is no potable water at the campground, but drinking water is available at the park. Branch Pond has seven secluded tent sites. There are 23 campsites along the river. Equestrians will find five hillside sites for horse camping only, including enclosed and open stalls. There are also several stalls away from the river. Reserved sites are marked by 4 p.m.; walk-ins discouraged. Portable toilets. Take Route 60 west and turn right onto Route 605 at James River Bridge. Go seven miles and turn left onto Route 606. 434-933-4355

Staunton River State Park: There are seven cabins ranging in size from a one-room efficiency to a two-bedroom. Two-night minimum stay required. Forty-eight campsites, ten with water and electricity for RVs, 24 with water and electricity for pop-ups and 14 for tents (no hook-ups). All sites have grills. Bath house and dump station are centrally located. Pool swimming and boat launch free for overnighters. Park is 18 miles east of South Boston. Take Route 360 to Route 344. Follow Route 344 for ten miles. 434-572-4623

Picture Lake Campground: On Boydton Plank Road, in Dinwiddie County. From I-85 take Exit 63A to Route 1 south, 2.5 miles. (804) 861-0174

Whippernock Marina and Campground: Located on Lake Chesdin in Dinwiddie County. 10 sites. (804) 265-5252

Cosy Cove Campground: 80 sites. Ten miles west of Dinwiddie from Route 460 on Chesdin Lake Road. (804) 265-9000

Spring Gardens: 41 sites for RVs only. On Route 460 west of Petersburg. (804) 732-8908
